Architectures for Web Analytics

In late 1999, several colleagues and I started a project at IBM called WebFountain. The goal of the project was to build a platform capable of performing complex queries over the web, to extract patterns, trends, and relationships that might be of interest to our customers.

There have been a number of papers published about WebFountain:

A paper in the IBM Systems Journal gives a good overview of the WebFountain architecture.
A paper by two of the founders covers some of the early goals of the project.
Then a series of papers show analyses performed on WebFountain data. For example, this paper on semantic annotation won the best paper award at WWW for a large-scale automated tagging scheme used for bootstrapping the semantic web.
